I've never seen it myself, but my family tells me that our dog has been having convulsions several times. We had a CT scan taken at a vet but didn't find any problems. They prescribed us a rectal medicine for when the convulsions occur. What do you think could be the cause? Also, the convulsions never happen when I'm around, but do you think there are any reasons behind this?

Hi Charlotte, Firstly,the fact that the convulsions do not take place when you're not around could just be a mere coincidence,that has no implication on the dogs health. And for convulsions,there are many reasons a dog may have convulsions, it could result from low blood sugar levels and liver disease or poor circulation of the brain and mineral deficiency. But it's important to note the following; 1. How long the convulsions take 2. How frequent does it occur,I mean you should note if there is a sequence at all. 3. What are the symptoms that you may notice prior to the convulsions 4. How exactly the convulsions happen,I mean you should watch the pet during the convulsion,or perhaps take a video, might be your relatives too though. These are all to help your vet reach a conclusion on what exactly is wrong with your pet, and to also know how to go about the treatment!

Hello Charlotte, In general Convulsions are symptoms of many diseases. But when we do all the possible tests and we find nothing most of the time it can be caused by epilepsy "of course based on the convulsion itself" . So first u need to describe the convulsion and the time between one and another so that way ur vet can get to a conclusion and treatment and u can get some answers too.

Hello Charlotte, Convulsions are rare but not uncommon in dogs as such is a major clinical signs seen for some viral,bacterial and parasitic infections. It might also be as a result of a congenital defect of the CNS and associated organs and structures. I would rather you seek a second opinion.

Hi Charlotte, Convulsions can be classified as intra cranial or extra cranial (meaning - problem inside de brain or outside the brain respectively). Normally we start oral medication when dogs have more than one episode in 3 months or so. If blood work and CT scan ruled out all of the diseases, it is most probably idiophatic (just a a beautiful name for "I don't know the cause"). What is important to do is write down whenever the convulsion happens (like a log) and how long does it take and also all the symptoms you or somebody else sees. This is a very important information for your vet so he can treat accordingly.
