I had my pet castrated two days ago. His stool has been runny after surgery, but should I take him to the vet? I've been giving him post-op medications in the morning and evening.

Hello Hakesh. That condition is the reaction of the anesthesia drug. Keep the medicine on time. He will be okay. Regards, Dr. Nisrina

Hello, I used Smecta/Smikactiv, and had great results, and it usually does not interefere with any ongoing treatments.

Hello, Acute or chronic diarrhea can sometimes happen after sugery.Acute diarrhea usually goes away after a day or two. You could also watch the pain killer you use, your Pet might be showing side effects. Try to also get stool hardeners, it'd help your pet with the stool. If the case persists for days, kindly rush up to your vet. Thank you!

Dear Hakesh, You should have no cause for alarm over your pet......Your pet could be showing side effects of the post operative medications it's taking as some medications cause watery faeces. However, make sure you fix an appointment with your vet asap if the condition deteriorates Kind Regards

The pain killers can cause diarrhea (runny stools) and vomiting. If you're pet feels fine (is active, eats well, is drinking, is not vomiting, the wound looks fine) then there is no urgent need to go to the veterinarian. You can give him cooked rice (no added salt) with chicken (without skin). You can additionaly buy stool hardeners which contains kaolin and pectin - you don't need a prescription to buy them. Give him a rice-chicken diet a couple of days and then start giving slowly his cibbles again. If the diarrhea woun't stop in a day then I would discountinue with the pain killers. You should look if he is fine without them. If he is lethargic, feverish, then contact you're vet immidiately.
